Dr. Shirley Bien is a Fremont dentist who can perform a variety of dental procedures including dental crowns. The dental crown is an easy cosmetic, protective and restorative dental choice for your smile.
A crown is also referred to as a cap and is used to cover and protect your tooth.
A PFM crown is a porcelain-fused-to-metal crown. The crown consists of a metal crown that is then fused with porcelain in a high-heat oven. The porcelain of a PFM crown covers the metal part completely. Another crown option is a gold crown also covered with porcelain, or crowns that consist of no metal: a Bruxzir or Zirconia. Dr. Shirley Bien can over what dental crowns will work best for your needs in her Fremont, CA dental office.
There are three main purposes for dental crowns: protection, restoration and cosmetic.
Protective Dental Crowns
A dental crown can be used to protect your tooth from breaking. If you have a large amount of decay, you may have the decay removed and then you’ll receive a filling. A crown can be added to further protect your tooth from damage or breaking.
Cosmetic Dental Crowns
Do you have a broken, stained or incorrectly-aligned tooth? A crown is a good way to disguise and fix these issues. Cosmetic crowns are common and often chosen by our Greenhills Dental patients who want to fix these unsightly dental issues. The crowns can be blended to your tooth’s natural color so they look natural in your mouth.
Restorative Dental Crowns
If your tooth is broken or falling apart, a restorative crown is a good choice for protection and to prevent further damage. Crowns can also be used in dental implants to replace a missing tooth or teeth.
The Dental Crown Procedure
Dr. Shirley can give a dental crown right in her Fremont, CA dental office. You’ll need to come in at least twice for the procedure. The first step is to make sure your tooth is ready for the crown. This involves shaping your tooth to receive the crown and removing the outer layer of the tooth’s enamel. Once the shaping is done, the center of your tooth will just be visible, and that will be the basis of the crown.
Every person’s mouth is different, and the shaping process depends on how much enamel needs to be removed, as well as why you’re getting a dental crown at Greenhills Dental. You may need to have just a bit of enamel removed or you may have significant decay.
After the shaping is done, Dr. Shirley Bien will need to make an impression of your tooth so you can have a custom-fit crown. The impression will be sent to the dental lab, and you will be asked to come in when we’ve received your crown. The temporary crown will be removed from your tooth and we’ll replace it with the new crown. We’ll see how it fits and if any adjustments are needed. Once the dentist ensures that your crown is secure with cement, you’ll be sent home to enjoy your new smile.
Crowns are meant to last, and with proper care, you might never need your crown replaced. You will need to make sure that you clean your teeth properly, and have healthy gums. Crowns that aren’t properly maintained can fall out or break. You may feel some discomfort while you are getting accustomed to a new dental crown, but the awkward feeling will quickly go away. If you do need your crown replaced, our Fremont, CA dental office is happy to do it.
