When it comes to the dentist, you may be scared or nervous about what is going to take place. If you have ever had a bad experience at the dentist office, then you probably do not want to step foot in there. At Greenhills Dental Care, we have heard some of the horror stories from patients, but we want you to know that we are NOT that type of clinic. In fact, our Fremont dental office is designed to keep you comfortable and provide you with the best care that is not only enjoyable, but pain free as well.

When it comes to dental care, it needs to be done. You need cleanings and you need work performed on teeth that have suffered trauma, decay, or disease. BUT, you do not have to fear those procedures. In our office, we cater to patients who have dental fears and anxiety about their procedures. We work hard to make sure you do not have to prepare yourself for days just to step in our office.

Dr. Bien is trained and qualified to provide sedation dentistry and we offer several options for you to choose from. Many dentists and patients are unaware that general anesthesia is available to them for their procedure. Since they do not know this, the patient never asks and the dentist never offers, thus leaving the patient scared, nervous, and already deciding this is the last time they will visit the dentist.

General anesthesia is a wonderful thing in the dentistry world because it allows the patient to relax and Dr. Bien to do what she needs to. There are benefits for both Dr. Bien and the patient. Sometimes, patients are not just afraid of the dentist, but some of them have disabilities or medical conditions that cause them to not be able to handle a simple dental procedure and this means that there needs to be an option such as general anesthesia available.

Patients who are unaware that an option to help them exists will be left to sit at home and try to self-medicate because they do not seek out the care that they require due to their fear and inability to tolerate the procedure.

If you are in need of general anesthesia for your dental appointment and you want to talk about your options, call Greenhills Dental Care now.

Why Do Dentists Say Sedation if They Don’t Mean It?

There are many types of sedation available and some dentists do not distinguish between them, which can confuse patients. Patients may think that they will be put to sleep for the procedure when in all reality, they will be awake the whole time. It is important for you to speak with Dr. Bien about what sedation option is best for you, so that you can be confident in your treatment.

Below, we will talk about some of the different sedation options available for dental procedures and you will be able to see the differences in them.

  1. Oral Conscious Sedation

Just as it sounds – you are awake and conscious during the procedure. This type of sedation will only slightly calm a patient down and relieve a small amount of anxiety. If you suffer from severe anxiety, this option will not work for you and should not be tried. This option does not put the person into a sleep, but rather numbs them to what is going on around them.

For this option, patients are given a medication orally and then procedure will not begin until the medication is activated within the system. You may or may not remember the procedure, but you will not experience pain.

  1. IV Conscious Sedation

Again, you are awake during this type of sedation and the main difference between the one above and this is that you will receive medication through an IV, which means it directly enters your bloodstream and the results are fast. You will receive the IV in one of your arms and you will be awake for the procedure.

This type of sedation in our office will require additional monitoring to ensure you are healthy and stabilized the entire time. Our team of technicians will monitor your vital signs the entire time.

  1. IV Deep Sedation

IV deep sedation is a type of sedation method that is often used in hospitals by anesthesiologists and oral surgeons. You will NOT be awake once given this medicine and you will likely receive it when you need to have a bone graft or extraction performed. An IV will be inserted into your arm and the medication will enter your bloodstream immediately thus taking effect right away.

At Greenhills Dental Care, we will closely monitor you the entire time and keep tabs on your heart rate and more the entire time you are asleep in our office.

  1. General Anesthesia

General anesthesia is the deepest level there is when it comes to anesthesia and this is where the patient is rendered completely unconscious during the procedure. This unconsciousness can last from one to a couple of hours and is done when the patient needs a large procedure performed. Typically, only an anesthesiologist will perform this type of anesthesia, but a trained person in this field could as well, such as Dr. Bien.

The patient is completely monitored during this time to include his or her vital signs. This is the best option for those patients who are deathly afraid of the dentist or dental procedures.
