Cosmetic Restoration Procedures Offered

There are several types of cosmetic procedures that are offered in our Fremont office. These procedures are designed to accomplish something that you want to improve about your smile, but do understand that not every procedure may be right for you. For example, you may think you are a good candidate for a veneer, but you actually need a dental crown. Dr. Bien will assess your dental health and then discuss your options with you.

Before you choose the procedure, you want performed, make sure to evaluate the pros and cons of each and discuss any concerns with Dr. Bien. Let’s look at some of the procedures offered in our Fremont office now.

Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are the most common cosmetic procedures and are used to cover up any flawed teeth that you may have in your mouth. These are often referred to as caps, which is an interchangeable name for them. Crowns work well to help protect your tooth and it is used in both cosmetic and restorative procedures.

The crown is placed over top of a tooth, but it sits at the gum line and not under the gum line, which means no surgery is required for placement. Dr. Bien will use a dental cement to secure the crown onto the tooth. You will usually receive a temporary crown, as the permanent crown will need to be made.

Crowns are tooth-colored and are used for all types of cosmetic procedures and you may want one for a similar or different reason than someone else. Some of the common reasons for dental crowns include:

  • Improvement of the tooth’s shape or look
  • Protection for a broken or fractured tooth
  • Cover up of a discolored or stained tooth
  • Support system for a severely decayed tooth

When it is time for you to choose a dental crown, you can choose the material that you want used on your tooth. In most cases, patients choose porcelain, but it is possible for you to choose all metal, porcelain fused to metal, ceramic, or resin. When you come into our office, Dr. Bien will talk to you about what is available and what will work best for you.

Dental Veneers

Veneers are one choice of cosmetic restoration that is ideal for patients who want to improve the look of their front teeth. Dr. Bien will recommend veneers for you if she thinks that they will benefit you and improve your smile. A dental veneer is made from a porcelain shell that is thin in nature and it is cemented over top of your tooth once it has been shaped.

Many patients who receive dental veneers will choose them because they want to hide a flaw on their tooth or cover the tooth up for one reason or another. Your front teeth are one of the very first things that people will notice about you and you do not want your friends and family to have a poor impression of you.

Veneers do not get placed on the back teeth and this is reserved for dental crowns. It is usually the front teeth that receive the veneers.

When Dr. Bien places a veneer on your tooth, the enamel will need to be removed and the tooth shaped. The veneer cannot just be cemented to your tooth the way it is now. The removal of enamel does not hurt and is quick and painless. If you are interested in dental veneers, they can help with:

  • Worn down teeth
  • Chipped, broken, and fractured teeth
  • Stained and discolored teeth
  • Gaps
  • Misaligned and uneven teeth

Dental veneers are popular because they are able to be color matched to your natural teeth and they are shaped to your individual teeth, so there is no extraction or extenuating prep work needed. Veneers are also resistant to stains!

FREE Cosmetic Restoration Consultations

When you come into Greenhills Dental, Dr. Bien will talk to you and go over your dental options with you. You will be able to discuss whether or not veneers or crowns are the best option for your mouth and if you are a good candidate for the procedure. BEFORE any procedure takes place, Dr. Bien will examine your mouth and also take x-rays of your teeth to ensure there are no underlying problems. If there are, these issues will need to be fixed first for your cosmetic procedure to be successful.

For example, if you plan to have a veneer placed on one of your front teeth, but you are suffering from gum disease, the gum disease would need to be treated and healed FIRST. This is for your safety and your overall oral health.
