If you hate the way your teeth look, then you may want to consider porcelain veneers as an option. Whether your teeth have a large gap in between them, are stained, broken, or chipped, veneers are a wonderful option to hide all of these flaws. If you are looking for a solid solution to your problem, the team at Greenhills Dental is ready to help you and would love to restore your beautiful smile.

Most people have a tooth or two that they are unhappy with and they do not like the way it looks. This is natural and it happens to everyone. Unfortunately, you may not have been born with beautiful teeth and you know what? No one is. In fact, those Hollywood smiles you see have had work done on them too. No one has beautiful teeth without some type of effort put into them, so you are not alone.

When it comes down to it, porcelain veneers are a wonderful option and they can improve the look of your teeth in just two visits to our office. If you would like to talk about your options, call our office now to schedule an appointment to see Dr. Bien.

What is a Porcelain Veneer?

If you are unsure of what a porcelain veneer is, no problem. Many people do not know and it is a small, thin shell that is made out of a porcelain material and then placed over top of your tooth to hide any flaws it has. The veneer is cemented onto the tooth once the tooth has been shaped. Most patients choose this option because the veneer itself is durable and it does not stain, even over time, so you can enjoy your favorite foods and drinks without worry.

Veneers are designed to match the color of your teeth, which makes them unnoticeable to those who you have not told you had work done. It is important to know that veneers cannot be placed on the back molars in your mouth and are generally used only on the front teeth for the best results.

Why Veneers?

Many patients choose veneers because they do not want to undergo the process for other options. For example, a veneer is much easier than a crown, but it provides similar results. In addition, veneers are very durable and they will last a long time if you properly care for them.

Veneers are used for:

  • Gaps
  • Stains
  • Damage to the tooth
  • Misalignments
  • Chips, fractures, breaks

Veneer Consultation and the Procedural Steps

When you visit our Fremont office for a FREE veneer consultation, Dr. Bien will sit down in the exam room with you and look over your teeth. At this time, x-rays will be taken to ensure that there are no underlying problems that may be hiding. If there are, they will need to be corrected before the dental veneers can be placed on your teeth. If you are a good candidate for the procedure, Dr. Bien will discuss the treatment plan with you and you will come back into our office for the procedure to be performed.

It is important for you to understand that a veneer cannot just be cemented onto any tooth and the tooth must be prepared FIRST. This also means that all problems with the tooth must be handled accordingly as well. For example, if you have a cavity, you will need to have it corrected before the veneer can be placed on the tooth.

You can expect to visit our office twice for the veneer procedure. When you arrive the first day, Dr. Bien will remove some of the enamel on your tooth. This is the shaping process and it is not painful at all. In fact, most patients do not feel a thing. Dr. Bien will only remove a small amount of enamel or enough that the veneer will sit smoothly on the tooth. You will never be able to tell the enamel has been removed. Once it is, an impression of the tooth will be taken and sent to the lab for the veneer to be made.

When the permanent veneer arrives in our office, we will call you and have you come in for a second appointment. At this time, the veneer will be fitted to your tooth and any additional adjustments will be made to accommodate the veneer. Once Dr. Bien is happy with the way it fits, it will be cemented onto the tooth and a light placed on top to create a strong bond.

Downsides to Veneers?

There are some downsides to veneers, but most patients think the benefits outweigh them, but only you can determine that for yourself. Veneers can easily come off if you chew or bite on objects that you should not such as sticky candy, ice, or your nails.

Veneers are a permanent solution and not designed to come off of your teeth. Therefore, once the procedure is done, the veneer is in place and you cannot just take it off if you decide you do not want it or like it.

Veneers do not last a lifetime and they will need to be replaced every five years or so depending on how you care for them and how much they wear down over time.

Lastly, veneers are not immune to tooth decay and you can still get it. You need to make sure you care for your teeth and veneers properly and that you brush and floss them the way you should and as you would if the veneer was not in place.
